artist statement

My work is about simple, quiet moments. Sunlight dancing inside a glass of water. The swirling shapes of reflections in a silver bowl. The changing colors of shadows on a tabletop. These are visually exciting to me.

This series was prompted by a cross-country move to Florida in 2004. The intensity of the subtropical light was intoxicating. Each morning I found myself, coffee cup in hand, watching the dawn's first rays stretch across the lanai floor. As the day progressed, the light became brighter. The shadows moved across the room, changing direction and hue.

I began to notice the beauty in common objects.

Oil paint has always been my favorite medium. It is such a sensuous experience to push gobs of luscious color around a canvas. So, it was natural for me to translate these sunlit moments into paint.

Larger canvases give me the opportunity to explore and enjoy the many interesting nuances within a subject. Pieces of reflected light that are barely visible to the naked eye can become lovely danish curves or playful circles. I continue to be intrigued by this transformation of a everyday object to a design of colored shapes.
