The Artist My first memory is the wallpaper of my childhood nursery. It was a pattern of dancing cartoon rabbits and balloons, done in yellows, pinks, and blues. I have been in love with color ever since. My passion for art was fueled by some early successes, like winning regional art awards at the age of eight and having a poster design published at age seventeen. In my youth, library books brought my teachers to me - like Vincent Van Gogh, with his vibrating colors, and Milton Glasner, with his strong graphic designs. As an adult, I traveled to every art museum I could - from Boston and New York City, to Seattle and Denver, to Los Angeles and Tampa - absolutely fascinated with seeing great art in person (and, often setting off the silent alarms in my quest to get close enough to see the brushstrokes with my nearsighted vision). Every book, every museum visit, brought me back to my studio gushing with new ideas to try on canvas. For many years I woke at 4:30 am, excited to squeeze in several hours of painting before going to my full-time job in advertising. Georgia O'Keefe and Chuck Close inspired me to paint larger and with my own interpretation. Henri Matisse taught me simplicity of design and line. Janet Fish showed me how a tabletop still life could be made interesting. A cross country move to Florida in 2004 gave me the blessing of time - time to really look at everyday objects around me. I grew to appreciate the beauty in the seemingly mundane. The way flower petals glow mysteriously in strong sunlight. (Can I get that on canvas?) The fluid pattern of shadows made by cherry stems on a white plate. (Can I capture that in paint?) The way objects are reflected in metal surfaces, yet also become defined by reflected light. (Can I translate that in two dimensions?) I began to paint again, but so differently than before. The subjects became the simple objects that surround me in my home. The style became tighter and more realistic, to capture the intimate details I had grown to see with more careful observation. The compositions are clean and graphic. These artworks make up the series "Moments of Beauty." In a lifetime of painting, these are my most personal works, expressing my appreciation for the simple things around us that help make life sweet. "Moments of Beauty" is dedicated to my husband, Al Walker, whose devotion makes my world beautiful.
